“Most Christian “believers” tend to echo the cultural prejudices and worldviews of the dominant group in their country, with only a minority revealing any real transformation of attitudes or consciousness. It has been true of slavery and racism, classism and consumerism and issues of immigration and health care for the poor. From a religion based on a man who was always healing poor people and foreigners, it defies any logical analysis! One would think that people who insist on being monotheistic would be the first in line to walk across the artificial boundaries created by nation states, class systems, cultures and even religions. But often they are the last! It makes one wonder if they believe what they say they believe. Religion has too often become the way to defend the self instead of the way to “let go of the self” as Jesus forthrightly taught (Luke 9:23).”

I hadn’t been dancing the last few weeks due to silly little life things like school and work. I went last night and even though I didn’t have the best dances of my life, I woke up this morning with a huge grin on my face and spring in my step. Yay, dancing endorphins.

The 3 year old twins I nanny make my heart glad. Thing1 is definitely a girly girl and she also loves super-hero underpants. Thing2 is a sweet, energetic boy who loves to take things apart. He also loves to dance and twirl with his sister. So he wears dresses sometimes.

The fact that his parents are totally cool with that is so great. Our culture forces children into such strict gender roles. I’ve worked with many families that would tell him that twirling and dresses are not allowed, or even worse, make fun of or shame him into their idea of what it means to be a boy. At such a young age, parental love and acceptance will impact him for the rest of his life.

Dancing is one of the loves of my lifetime, and I was fortunate enough to never have anyone tell me I couldn’t. I’ve struggled with my body image and fitness, and at twelve realized I would never be a prima ballerina, but ballet gave me a body awareness I’ve enjoyed all my life.

This love of dance has become an integral part of my life mentally, physically, socially, and spiritually. I’ve seen so many little boys shamed out of dance classes or wearing what they feel good in by parents or peers and it makes me sad. They will never experience movement or music the way I’ve been given the opportunity to. Even if they do, many have to go through years of overcoming stereotypes surrounding masculinity and dance, so by the time they arrive to an age and place where it’s socially acceptable to dance, it can be difficult to build intuitive knowledge of the body and the musicality that we understand so easily as children.

We are all on a gender spectrum. Maybe one day he will become excited about different things, or maybe he will go to school and get teased and shunned for twirling. Eventually, these gender roles our society perpetuates will catch up with him. But he has a safe place to call home, and parents who try their best to let him express himself in healthy ways, and that can make all the difference.

I am eating processed lunch meat <ew, gross. wait, is that some “fire roasted” turkey in the fridge?

I am watching movies with titles like “i am a cyborg but that’s ok” and korean teen soaps on hulu because these things make me think “i am not a cyborg and that’s perfectly fine too” and “at least my drama doesn’t repeat itself every three episodes and i also will never understand how the winning of cheap plush toys at malls for others constitutes love” which only drives me to realize that this is the secret to love that i have been missing. so uh, who wants to go on a date to the arcade?

I play murder ballads instead of cheery, plucky tunes. Today I learned Caleb Meyer.

I take a nap in the middle of the afternoon. Actually it was probably because of that turkey.

My anthropology teacher has been encouraging us to take “feeling inventories” and none of the feelings under “feelings when needs are met” apply, and i have to go to the bottom of the page to choose from the box “feelings when needs are not met.” Now it feels like a puzzle. What needs are not being met? Now I’m paranoid and a little guilty for scarfing down lunch meat to fill the void that just wants what? God? Companionship? H20? PLUSH TOYS???

ALL OF THE THINGS. But on my short term goal list is the Big Apple, and some new footwork. And some sweet solo charleston moves. And more Balboa. And some hot chase sequences. Like I said, ALL OF THE THINGS.

Day 6: Favorite Group Dance

This is hard! I LOVE group dances, especially when they spontaneously happen on the social dance floor and all the newbies’ jaws drop. I think this may be related to my not so secret wish that my life were a musical and that people spontaneously breaking out into choreographed song and dance were a regular thing. I only know the shim sham, the tranky doo, and the first half of the california routine. Out of these, I’m a huge fan of the tranky doo. So much room for creativity! But my favorite is the Big Apple. Want to learn.
